The Wisconsin Veterans Museum has been able to restore 100 out of its 180 Civil War Flags Battle Flags. Since the sesquicentennial of the Civil War is coming up in April, they are going to be able to restore one or two more.
The restoration is an expensive process. It can cost from $5,000 to $10,000 or more to preserve these time-worn flags. Meg Jones in the Milwaukee Wisconsin, Journal Sentinel describes what this kind of restoration entails: “The treatment will include taking fiber samples, identifying original fabrics, removing surface soils by gentle vacuuming, humidifying to reduce creasing, stabilizing painted areas with conservation adhesive, and dying and applying netting to both sides of the flag.”
A number of these flags will be displayed this summer when the museum opens its exhibit about Wisconsin’s involvement in the Civil War.
